Switch is the device distributing the connection coming from the routers to the devices.
It's also used for eviting the risk of a switch going down, other switches will provide the network connection.
There are Type-3, Type-2 and Type-1 switches. Type-3 is considered a device, it's the most powerful one. Only it has IP address, Type-2 and Type-1 Switches don't have IP addresses.
